Obituary
MR. CHARLES UPHILL.
Mr. Charles Uphill, one of the last of the pioneer settlers who took up land in the district over 50 years ago, died on Friday at his residence, 19 Talbot Avenue, St. Kilda. Deceased was 91 years of age. Mr. Uphill, who was born in England and came to Australia when a young man, acquired land in the Pine Hills district and in course of time added to his original holding until over 6000 acres were embraced in the property known as "Pine Hills." He lived there with his family, and became a successful wheat farmer and grazier, and his property was regarded as one of the best improved holdings in the district. He retired to live in Melbourne many years ago, and his son, the late Mr. A. T. Uphill, managed "Pine Hills" until his death several years ago. Some time later the property was sold. Possessing a wonderful constitution, Mr. Charles Uphill was a very active man in spite of increasing years, and he was able to drive a car and attend to business matters up till a comparatively short time before his death. He is survived by his widow and five children — Lucy (Mrs. J. D. Robert son, Corowa), Walter (Coonabarabran), Herbert (Forbes), Annie (Mrs. Maclnnes, Dubbo), Minnie (Mrs. W. G. Mackintosh, St. Kilda). The remains were taken to Deniliquin for interment in the family vault, at the cemetery in that town.;Principal=Charles Uphill5

Uphill,of "Kilbonnie,"Forbes, who succumbed to an attack of pneumonia. Deceased, who was 52 years of age, was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, not only for her work on behalf of the organisations of the Methodist Church, but for her great interest in the Country Women's Association. In addition to her sorrowing husband, she leaves a family of three sons and one daughter, the latter being Mrs. Hull, of Trundle, while the sons are Messrs. Jack, Keith and Roy, all of Forbes.She is also survived by an aged mother living in Melbourne, while a sister, Mrs. J. McCormack, of Melbourne, journeyed from Melbourne to attend the funeral, which took place to the Methodist portion of the local cemetery yesterday afternoon. Rev. R. A. Gibbons performed the last sad rites at the graveside, while Mr. A. G. Jones had charge of the obsequies.;Principal=Nellie May Jackson6
Death*6 November 1939 "Kilbonnie", Forbes, NSW, Australia;
SUPPOSED SUICIDE
Mr. H. J. Uphill's Sad End
Found Hanging in Tree
His many friends throughout the Forbes district were shocked yesterday morning when the news was circulated that Mr. Herbert John Uphill, a well-known district farmer, had been found dead at his home, "Kilbonnie," 11 miles from Forbes, on the Bogan Gate Road.
The deceased was living at "Kilbonnie," with his son Kenneth, who informed the police that his father went to bed at the usual hour on Sunday night. Yesterday morning he was missing when the son rose about six o'clock, and a search revealed him hanging by a piece of rope from a gum tree about half a mile from the house. He was then quite dead.
IN DEPRESSED STATE
The deceased was 62 years of age, but no reason is assigned for his rash act other than he had been in a generally depressed state, since the death of his wife in March of last year. He was a man who was held in the very highest respect and had for many years been an active member of Forbes Farmers and Settlers' Association.
The funeral this morning was to the Methodist portion of the local cemetery, Mr. A. G. Jones having charge of the mortuary arrangements.
An inquiry into the circumstances of the death will be held next Saturday morning.7
