MRS. S. PAYNE
Mrs Sarah Payne, relict of the late James Stephen Payne, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Pullman, Henry Street, Penrith, on Monday, at the age of 76 years. Deceased had been a cripple for 25 years, and about a month ago had a seizure from which she did not recover.
Mrs Payne was born at Castlereagh, and was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Cornelius Lees, her father being the son of John Lees, a pioneer of Methodism in Australia, who was instrumental in building the old Castlereagh Church, the first of the denomination in Australia. In her youthful days deceased's family removed to Valley Heights and afterward to Springwood. She was married at Emu Plains, and thereafter Mr and Mrs Payne took up residence in Penrith. Mr Payne died in June, 1933.
Deceased leaves two sons and one daughter—James (Jamisontown), Harry (Kensington), and Ethel (Mrs Pullman, Penrith). There are also three brothers—Mr Cornelius Lees (Dulwich Hill), Mr Tom Lees (Concord West), and Mr Ebenezer Lees (Springwood). It was a sad coincidence that on the day that Mrs Payne died her sister-in-law, Mrs Tom Lees, also passed away, and the old homestead of Lees family at Springwood, recently the possession of Mr Johns, was destroyed by fire.
Mrs Payne was a very estimable lady, who was held in the highest regard by many friends in this district.
The funeral, which was well attended, took place on Tuesday, the interment being in the Methodist portion of Penrith general cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. P. H. Curtis. A number of beautiful wreaths paid tribute to the memory of one beloved and mourned.;Principal=Sarah Lees3
