News-Arct* | 8 May 1896 | "The Laura Standard", Laura, SA, Australia; MURRAYTOWN. [From a Correspondent], May 6, 1896. I very much regret to announce the death of Mr. Andrew Sclanders, mail contractor between Murraytown and Booleroo Centre. The deceased, who had been suffering for a long time, was taken very ill on Thursday night, April 16th, and Dr. Morgan, of Laura, was in attendance on Friday. He appeared to improve on Saturday, but on Sunday night the patient was in such great pain that medical aid was again sought, and Dr. Morgan was with the sufferer before 6 o'clock a.m. on Monday, 20th. He then advised Mr. Sclanders' removal to the Jamestown Hospital. On his arrival there both Dr. Atikin and the nurses did their utmost for the deceased gentleman, but he gradually sank lower and lower, aud breathed his last at 2 o'clock a.m. on Thursday 30th ultimo. Although Mr. Sclanders suffered most violent pains during the early stages of his illness, yet I am most thankful to be able to state the last few days were almost free from pain, and that he died comparatively a painless death. The funeral took place at Jamestown the same afternoon, and besides the immediate members of his own family there were round the grave Miss Cameron, Messrs. J. W. Cameron and C. Degenhardt, of Murraytown, and other friends. Mrs. Sclanders will continue the mail contract with the assistance of her eldest son.5 |
