MOTORING FATALITY.
WOMAN KILLED AT CONDOBOLIN.
Verdict of Accidental Death.
A motoring accident, which ended fatally, occurred at Condobolin at Wednesday night last, at about 8 o'clock, when Mrs Margaret Bassett, aged 62 years, received severe injuries, from which she died on Friday morning. It appears that Mr Frederick Newnham, proprietor of Tattersall's Hotel, Condobolin, was driving a motor car back to town after a visit to the Tallabong silver mines. Besides Mr Newnham, the car contained three other men. Everything went well until the motor was running into the gateway of the hotel, from which the old lady was emerging. The car had no lights, and Mrs Bassett appeared to lose her head, for she walked right in front of the approaching motor. She was knocked down, and sustained terrible injuries, including a fractured skull, fractures of the left leg, right collar-bone, and wrist. She was taken to the hospital and attended by two doctors, but she died early on Friday morning.
Mr Newnham, who was driving the car, was arrested on a charge of causing the death of Mrs Bassett, and was brought before the police court at Condobolin on Friday morning, and remanded to the Coroner's Court on Friday afternoon. Mr D. J. Moloney, of Forbes, hastened to Condobolin by motor, and arrived in time to attend the Coroner's Court on Friday afternoon, where he looked after Mr Newnham's interests. The evidence was taken before Mr W. Maitland, coroner, and a jury of six, the jury being allowed if required in cases of this description.
The evidence was to the effect that the car was returning from the mines, and the old lady, who, according to the evidence of her son, was shortsighted and hard of hearing, was coming through the hotel yard as a short cut from her son's residence.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and a rider was added to the effect that had the lights been on the car, the accident could not have been averted.9
