News-Arct* | 11 March 1922 | "The Sydney Morning Herald", Sydney, NSW, Australia; POLICEMAN SHOT. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. ALBURY, Friday. John Nicholas Ahern was charged at Moama Court yesterday with having on February 14 shot, with intent to murder, Constable Bassett. Constable Bassett gave his evidence with his right arm in a sling. He said that as he approached the residence of accused's father Ahern took a Winchester rifle out of a gig standing in front of the house, and, taking deliberate aim for about three seconds at witness, fired. The constable threw his right arm across his face, and received a bullet in the forearm, which was fractured. After firing the shot the accused lowered the rifle and appeared to be endeavouring to reload it. Having no firearms, witness retreated. The accused was about 22 yards from witness when he fired. Sergeant Goodwin described his pursuit of the accused, who set out in a gig along the Deniliquin stock route, the sergeant following on a bicycle. Witness succeeded in surprising accused in the bush after they had travelled four miles, but he had to fire two shots at Ahern before the man would submit to arrest. The accused was committed for trial. Bail was refused.4 |
