News-Arct*11 May 1859 "The Cornish Telegraph", Penzance, Cornwall;
William Henry Jasper, an apprentice to Mr. John Bassett, shoemaker, charged his master with an assault. The lad thought his master had accused him of a theft, but the former denied this. He and his father came to the master’s house at 9 o’clock at night and Mr. Bassett ordered them out and took the lad by the shoulder to put him out. The case was dismissed. The master then complained of threats from the father and negligence on the part of the son; while parent and child complained that the master taught his pupil nothing. The Bench recommended all to try and agree better, but if they could not, the one who had a specific complaint to bring it before them and it should be settled.10

CORRESPONDENCE.
MYSELF AND PYPER.
TO THE EDITOR OF The Cornish Telegraph.
SIR,—I have read the account of this trial in your paper of the 30th ultimo, and without stopping to except at many parts of the report I merely write to give the most positive denial to that portion of the evidence of the plaintiff wherein she swore that she had paid me thirty shillings per week for the loan of £10, or as the Judge stated in his summing up to the Jury, ‘780 per cent.’
I challenge any one who has done business with me to come forward and prove that such a preposterous sum was ever hinted at, demanded by, or paid to me during the 18 years I have been in business. My terms are well known to be one shilling in the £ per month for discounting small hazardous bills. And Heaven knows this does not recompense the great risks and losses I incur in accommodating the many who run to me in time of need for a few pounds.
I think it but fair, Mr. Editor, that whilst you report the applause which seemed at times to have greeted the remarks of the Judge during the trial, if you had at the same time told your readers the class of people those responses came from; for it seems they were the friends and relatives of Mrs.Pyper and the old man Semmens who appeared as defendant in the case I had of the day before. It would have been also well if you had further reported that the old Mr. Bassett, the shoemaker in Chapel-street (the father of the son who married one of the old Mr. Semmens’s daughters) was taken into custody and severely reprimanded by the Judge for his unseemly conduct during the time the trial was in hand.
The favour of a space in your next publication for the above remarks will oblige.—yours obediently, J. T KEVERN.—Penzance, January 5th, 1864.13
