There have been a few cases of scarlet fever about here lately, and Mr. Simmons, a farmer living at Carapook has lost two children from it, whilst the other members of his family are laid up. Mr. Simmons was on the eve of departing for the Riverina country, and had disposed of his farm, household furniture &c, so that the above calamities will he felt very severely by him.;Principal=Hezekiah Simmons5

In consequence of the cases of scarlet fever that have occurred lately in the vicinity of Sandford, there is a great falling-off in the attendance of scholars at the State school in that town. I find that the regular average of 61 has come down to 30, and it is likely to be further reduced. Itwould appear that some children have been visiting the houses where cases of fever have existed, and consequently parents have got alarmed at this, and have kept their children from school. Two deaths close together added to this alarm, and no doubt some parents and friends of the scholars are open to blame for not keeping their children just now more at home.
Mr. Simmons, of Carapook, who lately lost two children by scarlet fever, had another death in his family yesterday through the same cause. Influenza has been very prevalent, and some persons have suffered severely. The great changes in the weather have caused all of us here to experience severe colds.;Principal=Hezekiah Simmons6

ROSENEATH.
near Platina, is the fine house of Mr H Simmonds. This place I essayed to find on a former trip but failed, on this occasion I was more fortunate. Mr and Mrs Simmonds were compelled to leave home shortly after my arrival. None the less my welcome was a most kind one and I was handed over to the care of their sons and Miss Simmonds. Roseneath consists of 3500 acres. Formerly Platina (1900 acres) was embraced in this property, which is wire netted all round, Red loam, with pine and box chiefly as timber, predominates here. The 75 acres of Steimweidel looked well, being about 18 inches high early in September. There is a fine three-year-old Clydesdale stallion (Duke), by Marshall Keith (a prize-winner at the Sydney Royal Show), which is a good stamp of horse. He is a three-year-old, bay in color and ought to get good progeny. The garden at Roseneath is excellent. There are good flowers, vegetables and abundance of fruit in summer, I forgot to mention how very thick and heavy the timber on this property was when Mr Simmonds took it up 13 years ago.;Principal=Hezekiah Simmons10
