Death* | 2 December 1916 | Cobar Hospital, Cobar, NSW, Australia; Burning Fatality. A terrible burning fatality occurred at East Cobar last Thursday morning, the victim being Mrs Sarah Maria Stanford, aged 56, wife of Mr Alfred Stanford, an employee at the Great Cobar Mine. It appears that about 11 a.m. Mrs. Stanford was engaged over an open fire at her home cooking the mid-day meal, when her clothing became ignited, and the unfortunate woman was frightfully burnt about the legs and body. No one saw the occurrence, the only other inmate of the house at the time being a child, aged four years. It was some time before Mrs Stanford could get the child to understand and go for help, which it eventually did, going to Mr Cornish's Criterion hotel. Miss Cornish went to Mrs Sandford and rendered assistance. Dr Fisher was communicated with and after medical attention she was removed in the ambulance to the Hospital, where she died at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Sergeant Osborne reported the matter to the coroner (Mr Neil Morrison), who decided that there was no need for an inquiry. The remains were laid at rest in the Church of England portion of the cemetery on Sunday afternoon.6 |
