News-Arct*4 February 1854 "The Maitland Mercury", Maitland, NSW, Australia;
Inquest.—On Thursday an inquest was held by Mr. Parker, at Four Mile Creek, on the body of Michael Power, an elderly man. The evidence disclosed a melancholy family history. Some months since Power's wife deserted him and her family, including two young children, two years and four years old, and since then Power's health has gradually failed. The only other member of his family living with him was his son Michael, thirteen years old, who was almost constantly employed looking after their cattle, especially as his father got more and more infirm. Recently, a married daughter of Power's, Mrs. Dowling, residing at Berry Park, being sent for by her father, was shocked to find him so fallen away and ill, and the young children so neglected, and she pressed him to have a doctor, and see a clergyman, or come with the children to her house, but be refused, and said he would send for her if he wanted anything. She visited him again, and provided more food for him, but he still refused to leave his place. On Tuesday last, feeling better, Power told his son he had better go out after the cattle, which the lad did, after providing some tea and bread for his sick father and the children; young Power was that night unfortunately lost in the bush, and before he reached home next day his father was dead. No one was in the house when he died but the young children, but a neighbour hurried up on hearing one of the children crying outside that his father was dead. The hut and children presented a miserable aspect of neglect and filth.
The jury returned a verdict of death from natural causes. Mrs. Dowling took charge of the young children.4
