DEATH OF MRS. MEDCALF.
After an illness extending over some weeks Mrs. Medcalf, senr, of "Gillenbine," passed away last week. The deceased lady arrived at Trundle with, her husband, the late A. T. Medcalf, in the early eighties, and settled at Gillenbine, which was then a vast scrub, in the days when people required the heart of a lion to battle against the trials which beset the pioneers. Undaunted by the hard struggle against great odds the couple lived to rear a good family and to see their highest ideals realised. From a dense scrub, which would only carry a sheep to about five acres, the hardy pioneers lived to see the country improved to such an extent that it carries three times the number of sheep and grows thousands of bags of wheat. Where Gillenbine in the early days supported one family, there are now ten settlers tilling the soil and growing vast quantities of wheat. The late Mrs. Medcalf reared a family of seven sons and three daughters, all of whom (except one) reside in the Trundle district and live on the land. Mr. A. T. Medcalf predeceased his good lady a few, years ago and one son (Arthur) died two years ago. The following highly, respected residents of the district are left to mourn the loss of a good mother: Messrs. Charles, William, Bert Jack Bob and Ted and Mrs. Pike, Mrs. Bird, and Mrs. Bloomfield, all of whom were with their mother when she passed away. Archdeacon Neild, of Condobolin, a great friend of the deceased lady for over 30 years, and who held services at Gillenbine regularly after a 50 mile trip, performed the last sad rites at Trundle cemetery and also had a short service at the homestead before the cortege left for the cemetery. A very large crowd of friends of the deceased lady attended the funeral from all parts of the district. To the bereaved family we extend our deepest sympathy.8
