Death of Spouse | 13 January 1939 | Lithgow Hospital, Lithgow, NSW, Australia; LATE MRS. MORRIS Well Known And Popular Resident Mrs. Beatrice Eleanor Morris, of "Riverview," Hartley Vale, who died in Lithgow hospital on Friday night, was one of the best-known residents of the district, arid was highly regarded in all quarters. Her loss is a particularly heavy one to the organisations with which she was associated. The late Mrs. Morris was born at Hartley Vale, and had spent practically the whole of her life in the district. She was almost as well-known in Lithgow as in the Hartley area, for she did much social and other work in many spheres. She was a friend to the unemployed in the district, and raised funds on their behalf by way of concerts, while for years she was a member of Lithgow A.H.I, and P. Society, and acted as stewardess at shows until recent years. In her younger days she was a prominent tennis player. Mrs. Morris was in her 55th year. She is survived by her husband, Councillor Joseph Morris, of "Riverview," Hartley Vale, three sons and two daughters, to whom the deepest sympathy will be extended. Members of the family are Messrs. Kenneth (Katoomba), Roy "Riverview," Hartley) and Neville Morris ("Riverview," Hartley), Mrs. Hugh Mansell (Hayley-street, Lithgow, and Mrs. Roger Martin (Blackheath). She entered Lithgow hospital on January 2, and although an operation was performed, she never rallied. Interment took place on Saturday in the Church of England portion of Mt. York cemetery, the mourners being representative of every section of the community. Prior to the cortege leaving Matthews and Lemon's parlors, Lithgow, the Revi W. P. F. Dorph, of Mount Victoria, read a short service, and later officiated at the graveside. Blaxland Shire Council was represented by Cr. J. L, W. Barton (president), Mr. C. E. W. Brown (Shire Clerk), and ethers. Wreaths of the permanent type were received from Blaxland Shire Council, and the Hartley P. and C. Association, while there were numerous other floral tributes. The pall-bearers were Messrs. B. S., N., and D. Morris.;Principal=Beatrice Eleanor Morris5 |
Death* | 30 September 1954 | Gordon Convalescent Hospital, Leura, NSW, Australia; PASSING OF MR. JOS. MORRIS One of the oldest identities of the Hartley district and a shire councillor for 18 years, Mr. Joseph Morris passed away in the Gordon Convalescent Hospital, Leura, yesterday afternoon at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Morris, who became ill only three months ago, was born at Coonamble, where his father was a contract drover engaged by district property owners for the large movement of stock in the Central West. When he was only a child his parents moved to Hartley Valley on the Lett River near the present site of the Londonderry Bridge. The property of 300 acres, known as "Riverview," has remained in the family for more than 80 years and is now occupied by the third generation. On the death of his parents some 50 years ago, the late Mr. Morris took over the holding and developed it into a very well known orchard and sheep property. Apple were, on occasions, selected from his orchard to form the Hartley district exhibit at the Royal Show for one of the most famous and successful apple displays in the Commonwealth. The orchard, which is still a going concern, produced all the popular varieties and in his time Mr. Morris, shared with his orchardist friends in the valley, successes in district shows. At the age of 36 he married Miss Beatrice Morris, a member of a Lithgow family in no way then related to the groom of 50 years ago. His wife predeceased him 15 years ago. Industrious And Sporting All his life the late Mr. Morris was a very industrious man and was recognised as a keen sporting personality. In his early life he was a prominent racing cyclist and later became a most enthusiastic tennis player, forming the Morris team comprising members of his family and two cousins, the Dwyer boys. His interest in sport, was transmitted to his family, Mr. Ken Morris who shared the Lithgow doubles tennis championship with Mr. Eric Cullen his daughters Mrs. Lucy Mansell and Mrs. Olga Martin who several times represented at Country Week and another son, Mr. Royal Morris, who has won a number of trophies for his abilities as a cricketer, in the Lithgow area, whilst his youngest son, Mr. Neville Morris, still is prominent in cricket competitions in Lithgow and the Blue Mountains. At 64 years of age the late Mr. Morris was still playing a sound game of tennis and rode a bicycle through Hartley until he was 75 years of age. A man of highest probity, he had done much for the district and his passing will be sincerely regretted. In the days when politics did not enter Local Government affairs in this district and men were anxious to serve the community because they felt it a privileged duty, the late Mr. Morris was elected to Blaxland Shire Council for B Riding and gave good service for 18 years, retiring, before the war because of advancing age. For some years he was a district correspondent for the Lithgow Mercury. The late Mi. Morris is survived by his three sons, Ken (Blacktown), Roy (Lithgow), and Neville (Hartley), and two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Mansell (Lithgow) and Mrs. Olga Martin (Hartley) to whom sympathy will be extended. The funeral will take place at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Church of England, Hartley, the same building in which the deceased's parents were married before they went to Coonamble, and where he himself was married and his family christened. A lifelong friend, the Rev. W. P. F. Dorph, of Mt. Victoria, will officiate and interment will take place in the Hartley Vale cemetery beside the remains of his late wife. T. J. Andrews Ltd., of Katoomba, are in charge of the' arrangements.6 |
