Mr. D. R. McGrath
Formerly a well known farmer in the Canowindra district Mr. Denis Roy McGrath, of Rabaul-street, Littleton, passed away in Lithgow hospital at the early age of 55 years on Saturday morning.
The late Mr. McGrath, whose family became established in Lithgow when they moved here from the Central West 12 years ago, abandoned his share farming pursuits in Canowindra when failing health obliged him to move to a different climate.
He obtained employment in the Small Arms Factory as a viewer and remained on the job for nine years, but a rapid deterioration in health forced him to retire two years ago.
Besides being regarded as an authority on wheat and lucerne growing the late Mr. McGrath was a keen gardener and was deeply interested in poultry breeding. As a young man he was an expert horseman.
Because of his health he was unable to take part in any sporting activities, but found relaxation in his garden.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gertrude McGrath, five sons, William, Colin, Thomas (Lithgow), Kenneth (Parkes), John (Wollongong); three daughters, Brenda (Mrs. H. Monaghan), Veronica (Mrs. C. Collins) and. Miss Joan McGrath (Lithgow) ; one brother, Mr. Frank McGrath, two sisters, Mesdames P. J. Riley and Mrs. C. McKenzie (Goolagong), and four grandchildren to whom sympathy will be extended.
The funeral, which was largely attended, left St. Patrick's Church yesterday afternoon for the Catholic portion of Bowenfels cemetery where Rev. Fr. Louis Breslan officiated at the graveside. There were many floral tributes indicating the esteem in which the family has been held since its arrival in Lithgow.
Mr. Joseph Mills had charge of arrangements.4
