News-Arct* | 12 June 1916 | "The Leader", Orange, NSW, Australia; Passing of Pioneers. There 'crossed the bar' at Trundle, on Friday, Mrs. Pike, one of the first settlers in that rich wheat, district, and an old lady (she was nearing the nineties) who held the respect of the whole countryside. She was formerly the owner of Gobondry station, and leaves a large line of descendants, all of whom are comfortably situated throughout the district. A son, the late Arthur Pike, a former Orange resident, died here about two years ago from typhoid fever. The notorious bushranger, Ben Hall, was a former partner in the Gobondry property, before it came into the hands of the Pike family.9 |
Obituary | 16 June 1916 | "The Forbes Advocate", Forbes, NSW, Australia; OBITUARY. It is our sad duty to report the death of one of the oldest residents of the Trundle district, in the person of Mrs Jos. Pike. The poor old lady passed quietly away on Friday, 9th inst., at the ripe age of 89. The deceased had had indifferent health for some years, and had been totally blind for the last 8 or 9 years. Born in the County of Westmead Ireland, she came to Australia, and landed in Sydney at the age of 12, in the year 1839. She went to Burrowa, where she resided for some years. At the age of 18 she was married to Jas. Franks, and lived at Albury for some time. Of this marriage there were four sons and two daughters, they being John, Jas., Louis, Tom, and Katherine (now Mrs H. O'Bryan, of Hillsdale). Some years after the death of her first husband, she married Jas. Pike, and they lived at Widgewa station for some six years, when they moved to Gobondery station, where they resided for about 25 years. While at Gobondery, her second husband died, and left her with three childern from the second marriage—Stephen, Arthur, and Margaret. Of these three, only Margaret, now Mrs H. Harmer, of Trundle, is alive. The deceased lady was very well known and highly respected throughout the district, being perhaps one of the earliest pioneers in those parts. One of the old time sort that was not afraid to go back hundreds of miles from the rail, when there was no such luxury as a car to travel by. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Saturday last, the body being buried in the Roman Catholic portion of the cemetery. The Rev. Father Dunne officiated at the graveside. To the sorrowing relatives we extend our sympathy.10 |
