THE LATE MR. JAMES KANALEY
Mr. Jemes Kanaley, to whose death reference was recently made in these columns, died on his wife's 78th birth day, after a very short but painful illness, and although the end was realised not to be far off. It came with tragic suddenness. James Kanaley was the third son of the late John and Sarah Kanaley, of M'Laren Flat, South Australia. He was born at Kangarllla, South Australia, on February 17, 1859, and was educated at Mr. Gooding's school, M'Laren Flat. He was later married at Bordertown (S.A.), and it was only on July 18 last that his wife and he celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
One of the hardy old pioneers, Mr. Kanaley took up a scrub block at Ninnes (S.A.), and before the area became the fine property that it is to-day— the owners being the Messrs. Gardiner Bros.— much hard work was put in rolling down timber, erecting fences and buildings, and carrying out other duties that befell such men. One of the major difficulties was the carting of water from Bute, Kulpara and Lochlel. The last crop Mr. Kanaley grew in South Australia yielded more than 4000 bags and was taken off by himself and his three sons who now reside in the Junee district. Two headers were used to do this work.
Coming to N.S.W., Mr. Kanaley purchased the late John Morris' property at Marinna, where two of his sons' still reside. His first crop on the area averaged five bags of wheat to the acre. Incidentally, Mr. Brinkworth, president of the Farmers Union in South Australia, wrote a most appreciative letter to Mr. Kanaley in which he said it was men like him who had helped to build that union to what it now was.
A versatile man, Mr. Kanaley was a good veterinary surgeon, gaining his knowledge by practical experience. He was an expert horseman and won the ploughing championship at the Bute and Paskerville shows. Indeed many trophies and certificates adorn the walls at "Idavale," Ninnes. These bear silent testimony to his ability. As a young man he drove big teams loaded with wattle bark down the long Tapler's Hill, near Adelaide. It was a pleasure for him to assist his grandchildren with their ponies at the local shows. He was an excellent shot both in the bush and on the range. He had been a member of the Kulpara (S.A.), Inverell, Junee, Illabo and Lake Cargelligo rifle clubs and won many trophies and prizes.
In his three weeks' illness in hospital, deceased was attended with care by his family, and his wife was constantly at his bedside. Besides his widow he was survived by three sons and five daughters: May (Mrs. More, Sydney), Ruby (Mrs. E. J. Coleman, Gumly), Amy (Mrs. Keating, Sydney), Ivy (Mrs. Thomson, Crampton Park, Campsie). Hazel (Mrs. Williams, Woy Woy), and Walter, Sidney and Stephen, all of Junee. Mrs. Chapman, of Colonel Light Gardens (S.A.), who survives her brother, is 82 years of age. The funeral took place at Wagga, the body being laid to rest in the Methodist division of the Wagga cemetery. The Rev. C. J. Wells conducted the cervices, both at the church and at the graveside, and Mrs. Boswell presided at the organ for the singing of "Rock of Ages." Mr. Alan Harris was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Many relatives paid their last respects an23 November 1943 many beautiful wreaths were sent.3
