The house and furniture of Mr. Hurtle Jones have been destroyed by fire. The outbreak was discovered shortly after 12 o'clock, when the inmates were in bed, and all made a hurried escape in their night attire. A little boy, who was sleeping in one of the back rooms, had a narrow escape, being unable to find the door owing to the density of the smoke. He was rescued through the window. Mr. Jones was away at the time, being employed as a railway carpenter at Serviceton. The house and furniture was insured in the New Zealand Company for £270.
