OBITUARY.
THE LATE MRS. THOMAS HARMER.
A COLONIST OF 63 YEARS.
There passed away at the residence of her son-in-law, Cr. W. J. Gray, High street, Thornbury, on Tuesday, Mrs. Harmer, relict of the late Mr. Thomas Harmer, of Bundoora. She had reached the ripe old age of 82 and had been a colonist for 63 years, having with her husband left Norfolk, England, in 1850 as a young wife of 19. Her husband was one of the first brickmakers of the State, and long ere the Hoffman kiln was thought of he pursued his craft at Brunswick and also at Eltham and Diamond Creek, Just 44 years ago the family removed to Northcote to take up Rosebank farm (now Mac's dairy) on the banks of the Merri Creek. This they worked for 28 years, subsequently making their home at the well-known farm, Bundoora. Mrs. Harmer from her earliest years in the State was a zealous worker in connection with the Methodist church, and generation after generation of Methodist ministers, from novitiates to doctors of divinity, knew and appreciated her hospitality, for hers was ever an "open house" on their visits to her district. Her connection with the Methodist church in Preston, dates back to a time before the brick church recently demolished in High street was even built, when the worshippers, including such old identities as the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hutton, the late Mr. Wilkinson, of Bell street, and Mrs. Wilkinson, the late Mrs. Story, sen, the late Mr. Dredge, and Mrs. Hindes (still living at Preston, and now with Mrs. Wilkinson one of the only two survivors of that ancient congregation) met in a small brick building on the opposite side of the street. The Harmers also took a leading part in erecting the Methodist church at Bundoora, A lusty brood was reared in the two farm homes, the family consisting of three sons and seven daughters, all of whom survive. The sons are—Mr. T. Harmer, of Harden, N.S.W.; Mr. George Harmer, farm manager at the State Viticultural station; and Mr. Frank Harmer, Thomastown; and the daughters—Mrs. Wilkinson (wife of Dr. John Wilkinson); Mrs. Hatton, Neerim South; Mrs. Roe, Shepparton; Mrs. Mason, Glenvale; Mrs. Olney, Buninyong; Mrs. C. Le Page, S. Morang; Mrs. Gray (wife of Cr. Gray, Northcote). There were fifty-four grand-children and numerous great-grand-children. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Thursday, the interment being in the Coburg cemetery. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. James Trathan, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Jeffreys.4
