MOUNT VICTORIA.
DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Mr. William Field, one of the oldest residents of the district, died early on Monday morning, aged 86 years. Though the deceased was born on the Nepean, he had practically resided at this end of the district, Hartley and Mount Victoria, all his life. He was able to tell many interesting stories of the early days, having seen the convicts working in their gangs, and he claimed to have assisted in moving the first survey camp into where the busy industrial centre of Lithgow now stands. He was a splendid bushman and a noted axeman, and until failing health prevented him, was always to be found amongst the timber. Mrs. Field and an adult family of nine survive to mourn their loss. Until the sad drowning fatality at Fairy Dell two years ago the family numbered eleven. Rev. Father Tyler, of Sydney, who had administered the last rites of the church, officiated at the graveside in Blackheath cemetery yesterday afternoon, where a large concourse assembled to pay their last respects.4
