| News-Arct* | 20 October 2010 | "The Condobolin Argus", Condobolin, NSW, Australia; A very special party was held at the RSL on 9th October for Laura Wunsch’s 100th birthday. The atmosphere was loving and happy as 270 relatives and friends from most states in Australia celebrated. Laura entered the room while Rob Roberts sang “Ain’t She Sweet”. Proceedings began with all singing “Advance Australia Fair” and a toast to the Queen. Brother Clarrie and nephew Ted were MCs and a special guest was little sister Joyce – a mere ninety! Many guests spoke of the help and friendship from Laura and Leo through the years, An emotional Gary Mooney told how Laura and Leo had been his parents when he was 2-4 years old when mum Edna was ill. He still calls Laura “Mum Lorr”. Numerous letters from leading Australian politicians were read. Especially cherished were congratulations and photos from the State Governor General and the Queen. The house is full of bouquets and cards and Laura will answer all. Many family and friends organised different aspects of the evening. Music – piano, organ, drums and accordion – were played by a cousin, nephews and great nephews, plus Condo’s Brolga on guitar. Family and friends provided flowers, balloons, a large banner, candles and stars for decorations. A magnificent cake in lemon and white was made and decorated by cousin Dawn Jones. RSL caterers and staff provided dinner and drinks – thank you for your friendly and efficient service. Laura started the dancing with a waltz with nephew Bill. She did not go home until 2am. Of course everyone in the room was younger than Laura but by midnight some of those older youngsters were weary but felt they shouldn’t leave until the guest of honour had departed at 1am. One gentleman was relieved to see Laura leave but before he could go she was back and dancing with nephew Ted! Incredible! The evening was a wonderful experience for all. The younger family members will have special memories for life. All our love to Laura – special mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend – an incredible and lovely lady. On Sunday morning the Junior Cricket parents supplied brunch to many visitors before going home. It was another great get-together with some accordion music. Laura was there from start to finish of course!7 |
