POLICE COMMISSIONER'S COURT.
Saturday, 17th April, 1847.
Jane Jones, wife of Rees Jones, gardener, was charged under the Police Act with being an idle and disorderly person, and on suspicion of being a lunatic.
It appeared from the evidence ot William Durieu, servant at Government House, that the poor woman had there paid them several visits, for the purpose of speaking with his Excellency, but that her conduct was always peaceable. Upon one occasion she had made her entry through an open window into the library. She had been removed by the police upon two occasions, but offered no resistance.
His Worship—Well, what have you got to say for yourself?
Mrs Jones— Government House is mine. It was given to me by the Lord, who directed me to go there.
His Worship caused her to be remanded to Jail for a week, upon suspicion of being a dangerous lunatic.
The poor woman was attended by her husband in Court, and they appeared a very decent couple. We have been given to understand that the immediate cause of the disordered minds of both Lockyer and this woman may be traced to religious fanaticism.5

The two unfortunate persons mentioned in our Police report as having been committed to gaol for safe custody as lunatics, are calm and tranquil. Mrs Jones is the wife of an old soldier who had served with Colonel Gawler through the greater part of the Bonapartean wars. Illness had led her to adopt the use of tobacco, which she appears eventually to have taken to excess, and it is not improbable she may be benefited by its being kept from her. These may appear trifling circumstances, nor should we notice them but for the alarming increase of lunacy among us, which renders every fact concerning its victims interesting and important. It seems but yesterday that an asylum was thought necessary, now it is full.6
