Marriage*23 December 1936 St Patricks, South Grafton, NSW, Australia;
WEDDING
SHANAHAN—TUCKEY.
A very pretty wedding, which created much interest, was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church, South Grafton, on December 23, the contracting parties being Irene Ellen, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Tuckey, of Halfway Creek, and Colin Roy, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Shanahan, of Tamworth. The Rev. Dr. T. Farrelly officiated.
The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming, frocked in white satin and overall lace, cut on classical lines with long pleated fan train, plaited girdle and finished with a spray of orange blossoms. She also wore a beautiful coronet and embroidered lace veil, which were kindly loaned by Mrs. E. C. Trent, friend of the bride, and carried a beautiful bouquet of frangipani, pale lemon gladioli, lemon tulle with white satin streamers.
The. bridesmaid, Miss Kath Shanahan, sister of the bridegroom, and the maid of honor, Miss Edna Gosper, cousin of the bride, looked very attractive in ankle length frocks of ice blue organdi, trimmed with frills and posies of pink wood pulp flowers, white accessories. They carried pretty bouquets of pink and blue hydrangea, pink gladioli, tulle and satin streamers. They also wore blue tulle halos with pink flowers.
The two little flower girls, Misses Joyce and Marie Shanahan, sisters of the bridegroom, looked very sweet in their long frocks of pink organdi, trimmed with tiny frills, carrying baskets of asparagus fern, carnations and links of love, tied with pink ribbon. They wore white shoes and bandeaux of pink wood pulp flowers.
Miss Farrelly presided at the organ and, during the signing of the register, Miss K. Lynch sang an “Ave Maria."
The bridegroom was supported by his brother, Allen, as best man, and Mr. W. McCulloch as groomsman. The reception was held at the Criterion Hall, which was attractively decorated in blue and white. The cake, a three- tier one (made by the bride's mother) held pride of place and was beautifully decorated by Mr. Harrison. The bride's mother, wearing a frock of black crepe de chine, relieved with white, hat and shoes to tone, assisted by the bridegroom's mother, wearing a brown floral mariette, hat and shoes en suite, received the guests. Both carried posies of red gerberas and roses with red streamers. At the reception the usual toasts were honoured.
After the reception Mr. arid Mrs. Shanahan left by train for Coff's Harbor, en route for Newcastle and Sydney, where the honeymoon was spent.
The bride travelled in a frock of periwinkle blue crepe romaine, cut on slenderising lines, with black satin trimmings, a small black hat, trimmed with berries and eye veil, and blue shoes. She carried a blue handbag and gloves, the gifts of the bridegroom.
The bride's present to the bridegroom was a travelling rug. The bridegroom's gifts to the bridesmaids were a Stewart crystal scent decanter and a dressing table set, and to the flower girls, milanese sets.
The wedding presents were numerous and costly, including several cheques.
The catering, which left nothing to be desired, was in the capable hands of Miss Zietsch, of Grafton.
GIFT EVENING.
Prior to the wedding the bride was tendered a gift evening at Halfway Creek by her girl friends, Misses Marie Franklin, and Irene and Philomena Rediger.
The hall was nicely decorated, and dancing was indulged in by a large number of friends and well-wishers.
During the evening Mr. J. Murphy eulogised the many sterling qualities of Miss Tuckey, both as a citizen and as a sportswoman, and Mr. C. Rudder endorsed his remarks, and joined in wishing her a long life and happiness.
The fine array of presents, which Miss Franklin, in a neat little speech, presented, on behalf of the residents, spoke of the popularity of the young couple. Mr. Shanahan, on behalf of his fiancee, suitably responded.
With the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" and "Auld Lang Syne," a very happy evening came to a close.
