News-Arct | 30 October 1903 | "The Western Champion", Parkes, NSW, Australia; District Notes. [By " Hermit."] HILLSIDE is Mr Arthur Pike's. This gentleman's father formerly owned Gobondry Station. A 2560 acre block and showing some good characteristics as regards soil, this place is charmingly and most healthily situated. Proximity to mountains is generally an enhancing feature for a residence. This property is principally undulating and flat. The soil is mostly a chocolate loam, with some of the ordinary red type. Pine, oak and belah covered this ground originally, but with 300 acres growing good wheat, and another 50 acres nearly cleared there is no appearance of the denseness which probably prevailed prior to Mr Pike taking up this block. Both grass and wheat looked very well. Hudson's Early Purple Straw, Steinweidel and Allora Spring are the varieties grown on Hillside. Mr Pike believes in early sowing, also in fallowing. His sheep looked in first-class condition and he had just marked 60 per cent of lambs. He once took off an average of between six and seven bags of wheat to the acre. There is a comfortable new house, built to replace the one which was unfortunately burnt, a couple of years ago. It was uninsured and everything in the place was destroyed. This was hard luck, but Mr Pike did not sit down to bemoan his loss. Yarrabundi and another creek both head on Hillside.6 |
News-Arct | 30 January 1912 | "The Leader and Orange Stock and Station News", Orange, NSW, Australia; TRUNDLE. Mr, and Mrs. A. F. Pike, of "Hillsdale," well known and highly residents of the district, left for their new home in Sydney on Friday last. Their departure was the occasion of a large demonstration. A capable committee, under the secretaryship of Mr. T. W. Spence, organised a banquet and social in the local School of Art Hall on Tuesday evening last. There was a large attendance of their friends and well wishers. A sumptuous repast was provided. Mr. William Todd was in the chair, and speeches laudatory of the guests were made by leading residents. In the course of the evening the chairman presented Mr. Pike with a valuable gold watch, suitably inscribed, and Mrs. Pike with a handsome, piece of plate. Songs and recitations were given during the evening, and a most successful function was closed by a dance.7 |

Just before going to press we learned by wire of the death of Mr. Arthur Pike, late of Trundle, which occurred this morning at a private hospital at Orange, the cause of death being due to typhoid fever. The late Mr. Pike was one of the most popular and most highly esteemed of Trundle residents. He was one of that districts earliest settlers, and was ever a zealous worker for local public institutions. A keen sportsman, he was amongst the founders of the Race Club, Athletic Club, Cricket Club, as well as of the P. and A. Association. A couple of years ago he leased his fine residence at Trundle and took up his residence at Orange. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing widow and family in their bitter bereavement.9 |
