Obituary | 5 February 2014 | "The Condobolin Argus", Condobolin, NSW, Australia; Gordon Colin McCarron October 5, 1924 – January 7, 2014 Gordon Colin McCarron was born in Parkes on 5th October, 1924, the third child of Gilbert Graham McCarron and Ruby Hilda Violet McCarron nee McIntyre. He was always very close to his older siblings, Dorothy and Jack. The family lived at Canowindra until 1926 when they moved to a farm near Eugowra. In 1929 the family moved to Gregra siding, about 5 miles from Manildra. Gordon started school in 1931. In 1932 the McCarron family moved to the Cudal district and the children attended Toogong School. Their later schooling was by correspondence lessons from Black Friars School in Sydney, supervised by their mother. In 1934 the family moved to Manildra where the children attended school, until they moved to the Trundle area in 1935. Gordon then attended ‘Glenowra’ school on William Hall’s property. He rode a pushbike 9 miles each way to school until he finished his schooling 1938. In 1939 the family settled in Trundle. Gordon’s first job was as a shop assistant in Trundle but he enlisted in the RAAF on 10th November, 1942 and held the rank of Leading Aircraftman as part of the 112 Mobile Fighter Control Unit. Gordon served on many Australian bases and was sent to Bougainville, Emirau Island, Nisson Island and Jacquinot Bay in New Britain, as part of the war in the Pacific. He was discharged on 13th March 1946. Gordon then went into a General Transport Business in partnership with his brother Jack. The year 1959 was a big one because they bought a Seed Grading Plant, grading several kinds of seeds on farms in the Trundle, Bogan Gate, Fifield, Tullamore and Condobolin districts, As well, Gordon became engaged to the love of his life, Una Jones – they had met while playing first grade tennis. Una and Gordon were married in March 1960 and moved into a new house at 26 Goodwill Street that was built by Gordon’s good friend, Lockie Beauzeville. Jack lived with the couple for many years. Sport was a big part of Gordon’s life – he played cricket from when he was young, throughout his war service, and was captain of the Trundle Colts. In 1949, Gordon was selected in the Central West Country Week team to play in Sydney. He later umpired for Inter-town and Zone matches, as the number one umpire in the Central west. Gordon was thrilled to umpire a match between South Africa and Western Districts at Parkes on 8th January, 1964. He retired from umpiring in 1968. As well as cricket, tennis and table tennis were also a part of Gordon’s sporting life. Gordon formed the Condobolin & District Kennel Club in 1968, serving as President for 33 years from 1972, with Una as Secretary. They bred and showed champion black Labradors for many years. The club has been an outstanding success, attracting entries for the 6 district shows held annually over 22 days, from all over Australia. Gordon worked tirelessly to improve the venues and events, which proved to be a tremendous boost to the town’s economy, The dog rings are named ‘The Gordon McCarron Kennel Club Arena’ in his honour, and facilities include a high-fenced exercise enclosure, two Hydrabaths, two hair dryers, two washing machines and several BBQ areas for the use of competitors. Gordon received the Premier’s Award for service to the community in 2004 and the Royal Canine Council Distinguished Service Award in 2005. In 1970 Una and Gordon bought ‘Woodrow’, a farm off the Melrose road, where they raised pigs, turkeys and fowls. I used to love feeding the runts with bottles of milk – a novelty for a city girl like me. They were delighted when the farm was chosen as a location for the film, ‘The Crossing’, in 1989. The film starred Russell Crowe, Danielle Spencer and Robert Mammone. Gordon was an extra; very pleased to have his photo taken several times with the stars. Una and Gordon were both very keen gardeners, winning best garden several times. They were also known for their impressive Christmas decorations. Una passed away in 2004, leaving Gordon devastated; he then lost Jack and Dorothy. He was a great supporter of charities and kept in touch with his many friends and acquaintances. The house and yard eventually became too much for him and he moved into the Condobolin Retirement Village, where he was happy to be surrounded by people ha had known for so long. Gordon passed away peacefully on 7th January, 2014. Rest in Peace, Gordon.1 |
