Normanville. June 27.
A strange occurrence took place last week at the Wesleyan Mission-House. The particulars, as far as known, are as follows:—The Rev. Mr. Wilson was from home, and the family were sitting in an inner room, when about half-past 7 o'clock on Thursday evening an unusually loud knock was heard at the front door. Miss Wilson went immediately with a light, but on opening the door the strong wind put it out. Another light having been brought, to her astonishment she saw a bundle lying under the step of the door, which proved to he a living child bound up in a bundle of rags. Mrs. Wilson directed it to be brought in, and immediately sent information to the police, who did not however, take any action in the matter until the morning. Mrs. Wilson, with the assistance of a neighbour, proceeded to undo the parcel, when they found a fine healthy male child wrapped carefully in clean flannel rags, the outer covering being a piece of an old blanket stitched up, leaving only a small opening through which the child could breathe. The child was warm and comfortable, having evidently been recently packed and fed immediately before being left at the door. Dr. Stedman examined the child, and pronounced it to be about nine or ten days old. The police have declined to take charge of it, and consequently it still remains in the hands of Mrs. Wilson, who, although feeling it to be a gross imposition, has nevertheless done all that could be done for the poor little creature. Mr. Wilson has written to the Destitute Board, hoping to have the child removed there. Up to this time the police have been unable to obtain any clue to the mother or any further circumstances connected with this strange affair.5

The subject of my last communication is still the topic of conversation throughout the entire neighbourhood. Fortunately, the mother of the child has been found, which it is hoped will put a stop to the scandalous reports and gossips' tales so numerous and rapidly spreading. Suspicion having attached to a widow woman named Smith, the police went to the house, and after a short interview proposed to take the evidence of a medical man, when Mrs. Smith, evidently finding it would be useless to attempt further concealment, confessed to being the mother of the child, and expressed a wish to have it restored to her. Mr. S. Herbert, J.P., having been satisfied with the evidence adduced, allowed the infant to be given up to her, which was accordingly done on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Smith appears to have lost the sympathy of her neighbours; for although living in the township, yet no person seems to have known anything of her condition; her only help was one of her own children, a boy about eight or nine years old. This boy, it appears, carried the child and laid it at the door of the Mission-House, and then went with his mother to Curracalinga, a distance of two or three miles in another direction, probably to avoid suspicion. It is a matter of general surprise that there is no law to punish such unnatural conduct.6
