Obituary13 July 1901 "The Port Pirie Recorder", Port Pirie, SA, Australia;
Death of Mr. C. D. Hamer.
Profound regret was felt when it became known on Friday morning that Mr. Charles Dennis Harmer, the well-known butcher of Ellen-street, had died during the night. For something like a fortnight Mr. Harmer had been suffering from a serious illness which had supervened on an attack of influenza, and for the last ten days deceased; had lain in an unconscious condition. The widow and family of deceased had been made aware of the hopeless nature of the patient's illness, and they were prepared by their medical adviser for the sad end. The immediate cause of death was inflammation of the brain. Mr. Harmer was born at Kent, England, and arrived in South Australia with his parents when he was three years of age. His parents had followed farming pursuits in the old country, and after residing in Adelaide for a little time they took up land near Mount Barker, and it was here that deceased received his early education, at the school of Mr. V. Dumas. After a while he was indentured to Mr. A. McKenzie, saddler, of Mount Barker, and subsequently managed branch businesses for Mr. McKenzie; at Mannum and Nairne. Thirty-two years ago he gave up the saddlery business, and removed to Clare, where he embarked in the butchering business with his brother George. When the northern areas were opened up deceased came to Port Pirie, and for many years carried on business here as a butcher in conjunction with his brother. During the last twelve years Mr. C. D. Harmer has had the business on his own account, and being one of the oldest residents of the port always commanded a large trade. He was a man well-known and highly respected for his business integrity and kindly, generous disposition. Although he took no active part in public affairs, he was nevertheless keenly alive to everything which could make for the prosperity of Port Pirie. His was a familiar figure at our shows, and his opinion in matters relating to stock was eagerly sought. In fact, he was looked upon as one of the best judges of stock in the North. Mr. Harmer was in his fifty-sixth year. The deceased leaves a widow (sister to Mr. S. Martin, of Port Pirie), one son (Stanley), and five daughters—Mrs. R. Ridgway (late of Petersburg, but now of Narracoorte), and the Misses, Polly, Hettie, Ethel, and Eva Harmer, for whom general sympathy is expressed. Deceased was a Freemason, being a member of Pirie Lodge, S.A.C., and was also a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, M.U., and members of both Orders will attend the funeral, which is to take place on Sunday afternoon next. Mr. Chas. H. Beer has the funeral arrangements in hand.8
