Death of Mr. C. J. Evans
Mr Charles James Evans, a highly esteemed resident of Penrith, died in the Nepean Cottage Hospital on Tuesday, at the age of 68 years. Deceased had only been ailing a few days, having contracted pneumonia. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday, and rapidly declined.
The late Mr Evans was a native of Castlereagh, being the eldest son of the late Mr Jas. Evans and Mrs Evans, and lived in this district all his life. He was a grandson of Ensign Purcell of the early days' regiments. His father died a good many years ago, but his mother (who is over 90 years of age) is living with her daughter, Mrs Chas. Wright, at Castlereagh. In his young days the deceased was a farmer, and also had teams for carrying, and was a good horseman. About 30 years ago he joined the railway service, and at the time of his retirement, some years ago, was a signalman at Penrith. His wife (who was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Chapman), two daughters and two sons predeceased him. He is survived by one son (Mr Theo. Evans, Penrith) and one daughter (Mrs Aubrey Stewart, Canterbury); also by one brother (Mr George Evans, Picton) and the following six sisters: Mrs Wright (Castlereagh), Mrs Rees (Peak Hill), Mrs Stevenson (Lewisham), Mrs Russell (Auburn), Mrs W. Eagle (Homebush), and Mrs Easterbrook (Granville).
The late Mr Evans was a prominent Mason, being a member of Lodge Nepean for 21 years, and was Worshipful Master for a term.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, the internment being in the Church of England portion of Penrith General Cemetery. There was a representative attendance of townspeople and Masonic brethren. Rev Hatfield conducted the burial service, and Wor. Bro. J. J. Emery, I.P.M., read the Masonic service.
Mrs John Price and Son were the funeral directors.4
