THE SELECTORS' ARREARS.
A FORCIBLE STATEMENT.
DISTRESSING FACTS.
Mr. W. H. Irvine, M.L.A., has received the following letter from a constituent giving a statement of the position of the selectors in the Wimmera :
"Kaniva, February 27,1895.
"W. Irvine, Esq.. M.L.A.
"Dear Sir, - Herewith please find enclosed a list of a number of the farmers who left the district this last 12 months, and who have left their land in hands of the bank or mortgagees. Some of them are going to New South Wales, and some are going back to South Australia. Some of the land is let at nominal rental for grazing, and a good deal of it is not tenanted for anything. I regret to say that a great number more men will be going shortly. I can assure you the distress existing in this district is beyond description, only those that live here amongst the people could form an idea of their condition. I believe our statistics will show for the shire of Lawloit that the average yield has been about one bag per acre at Is. 6d. per bushel. By the above you will easily be able to gauge the distress existing. How people can comply with the demand of the Government blue papers for arrears of rent as well as current rents is beyond my understanding. The real fact is, that this threatening has put the people in such a fear and recklessness that they have no more heart left in them, and the result is a wholesale clearing out, some going openly after meeting their creditors, while a good number simply clear out quietly. How the Government are going to get tenants after driving the present ones out is beyond my knowledge. I beg to assure you that I am not overdrawing the position. I can sign a solemn declaration to the enclosed list being a real fact. It seems terrible to think a Government, to all appearance endeavouring to do the best for a country, should be so deficient in the knowledge of the state of the farming community. Not only here alone, but all round the district of Nhill there is simply the same state of affairs. I sincerely trust that you will use every means in your power to enlighten the Government and endeavour to get the rents extended, as I firmly believe the Government will find it to their advantage to do so. If the arrears are thrown buck and the leases redated, I feel sure the sixpenny rent will bring more money into the Treasury than the present one shilling one, and would give more heart to the few remaining, and would undoubtedly be one means of stopping the exodus. If the Government have any doubt as to the real facts, let them appoint a commission, and take sworn evidence through the Wimmera. They would soon find out the few facts I have above described you to be rather under rated than over. All the farmers were in hopes freights would be reduced this season, which, regretfully, was not realised, and the usual thing with deferred hopes is a sickening at the heart. Here the topic among cultivators is, what is the good of trying it again? I trust your influence will be of such a nature as to help us. Apologising for the length of my letter,
"I am, yours faithfully,
"J.JOSEPH, J.P."

Obituary7 August 1917 "The Nhill Free Press", Nhill, VIC, Australia;
OBITUARY.
The death occurred in Geelong last week of Mr John Jones, aged 90 years and 7 months, one of our grand old pioneers. The late Mr Jones was born in Pennyboynt, Radnoshire, Wales, and came to Australia with his parents in 1840, when they landed at Adelaide. The S.A. capital at that time was only a little town, and deceased recollected when gum trees grew in the streets and the natives were camped on places now occupied by the city's chief commercial establishments. He was married at McLaren Vale, but migrated to the Diapur district with his wife and family when the land was first thrown open to selectors. However, in 1912 he came to reside in Nhill, and twelve months ago removed to Geelong. At one period the late Mr Jones acted as Clerk of Courts in Adelaide, and was also a shire councillor for 15 years. Deceased's father fought with the British under Wellington in the battle of Waterloo in 1815, when he won several medals for bravery and good conduct. Four of his sons are at present fighting at the front, one being Major-General G. A. Jones who fought in the South African campaign. Deep sympathy is felt for the bereaved children, viz.—Mr Hurtle Jones (Rainbow), Sergeant R. Jones, N.S.W. police Sydney; Major-General G. A. Jones (on actng service), Privates R. V., and J. A. Jones (on active service), Mrs J. Sanders (Bayswater), Mrs J. Kanaley (N.S.W.), and Mrs G. Allitt (Miram).31
