News-Arct* | 25 September 1931 | "The Sydney Morning Heraild", Sydney, NSW, Australia; CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT. (Before Mr. Justice Stephen.) (Mr. McKean. K.C., Senior Crown Prosecutor.) | NOT GUILTY. Catherine Eugene Ikin, 52, was charged with manslaughter. The charge arose out of the death on June 12 at Veteran Hall, near Woy Woy, of her husband, Albert Edward Ikin. Mr. McKean said that the allegation was that the death of Ikin was brought about by the accused using a razor and severing an artery in his hand. Ikin died three days later. If the wound had been properly attended to right away it was likely that his life would have been saved. The whole case consisted in the fact that Ikin died at accused's premises, and that she had made three inconsistent statements. Accused and the deceased were addicted to the drinking of methylated spirit. In her third statement, which the Crown could not disprove, accused had stated that her husband, who became very wild, was in the woodshed with a razor. Her husband made a slash at her. They closed, and in the struggle the wound was accidentally inflicted. Dr. Paul, Government medical officer at Gosford, stated in answer to Mr. McKean that the wound could have been accidentally self-inflicted in a struggle. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Accused was discharged. Mr. McKean said that he wished sincerely to compliment Detective-sergeant Munday, of Newcastle, on the remarkably fair way in which he conducted the Inquiries in the case. His Honor agreed that it had drawn attention to the fairness which distinguished the police. Mr. W. C. Moseley appeared for the accused. ;Principal=Albert Edward Ikin7 |
