DEATH OF MRS. BURFIELD.
We have to-day to chronicle the death of another old colonist in the person of Mrs Burfield, who died at her residence, Daly Street, Gawler, on Wednesday, July 30. The deceased, with her husband, arrived in the colony, in the year 1839 by the ship Somersetshire. For many years after their arrival they resided at Port Adelaide, where Mr Burfield occupied a public position, and was one of the first Councillors in the municipality. He was also the prime mover in establishing the first Oddfellows Lodge in South Australia. He was the original proprietor of the land in Lyndoch Valley on which the township now stands and which he had surveyed into allotments and sold. Many years ago they retired from business and went to reside on their property at Belair, where Mr. Burfield died five years ago through an accident which occurred to him. After that Mrs Burfield came to reside at Gawler with her relations, and has continued there up to the present time. At the time of her death, which resulted from a long standing rheumatic affection and decay, she was 67 years of age. Mrs Burfield was the mother of Mrs W. Barnet, the wife of the proprietor of this paper, and of Mrs W. Miller, of Riverton.
Mrs Burfield was buried in the Willaston Cemetery, on Thursday, July 31, at 3 o'clock, p.m., the remains being attended to the grave by a number of friends and relatives, many of whom had come from a distance. The Rev. S. Howard conducted the burial service.
Thus one by one the pioneers of the colony pass from our midst. In a few years more there will be none remaining and the adventures and struggles of the early colonists will be only known as they are preserved by the press.;Principal=Mercy Potter4
