News-Arct*11 November 1863 "The Sydney Morning Herald", Sydney, NSW, Australia;
SUDDEN DEATH. — Early this morning a body was discovered, partially covered by the tide, at the foot of the bank of the Parramatta River, near Lambert's Inn. The body was found by a man named John Hughes, lying with the face downwards. A man named Michael Corigan recognised the body as that of William Buckley. Deceased, who had been living at General M'Arthur's cottage, and working there, was thirty-eight years old. James Cranny, innkeeper, one of the jury, stated that deceased came to his house on the previous evening after ten o'clock, and remained till after eleven – he was not quite sober but was able to take care of himself, he said he had been to a Forester's lodge meeting. From the evidence of Dr Pringle it appears that he had examined the body - the head, shoulders, and neck were considerably congested, there were evident signs of asphyxia, there were no marks of external violence, except two small abrasions on the face, which might be caused by falling down the bank. Witness was of opinion that deceased was stunned by the fall and that death was caused by suffocation from the position he was lying in, with his face in the water, or even before the water reached him. The jury found accordingly.5
