Death of Mother | 6 August 1934 | Castlereagh Road, Castlereagh, NSW, Australia; Death of Mrs A. Wright In her 92nd year, Mrs. Annie Wright, relict of William Wright, a beloved old lady of Castlereagh, passed away at her residence, Castlereagh Road, on Monday. She was very well known in the district and was affectionately referred to as "Grannie Wright." Deceased was the daughter of the late John Lee, and was born at Llandilo on 23rd April, 1843. While quite young her parents moved to the farm now occupied by Mr Nisbet on Castlereagh Road. She was educated at the old denominational school, which was held in the original Methodist Church (the first Methodist Church in Australia), which stood just at the rear of. the site now occupied by the present Methodist Church. While living at Llandilo, where her father died, she remembers travelling Sunday by Sunday over a rough bush track to attend Divine Worship in the old Castlereagh Methodist Church. Some early Castlereagh history is associated with her career. An incident that she related with pride was that her father held the horse of the first Methodist Minister of the colony, while he went in to beg a night's lodging of her grandfather, John Lees, who subsequently built the first Methodist church at his own expense. Her father carried on the work of the church, and among deceased's possessions was the first organ used in the Castlereagh Methodist Church. She could converse interestingly on old Castlereagh, in the days when the bullock drays did the work that is now done by fast moving motor vehicles. Daughters and sons of the deceased are: Mrs Colless (Bankstown), Mrs Jackson (Belmore Street, Penrith), Mrs H. Parker (Kurrajong), Charles, George, and Arthur (Castlereagh), John (Kogarah) and William (Grafton). The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place on Tuesday. A service was held in Castlereagh Methodist Chnrch and afterward at the church cemetery, being conducted by Rev, A. E. Putland;Principal=Annie Lees3 |
